Osama Bin Laden is Dead

It’s 11PM and the television news interrupted with a Special Report – “Osama Bin Laden Has Been Killed.” President Obama will be speaking and likely ever news channel will be reporting this chapter in the War on Terror.

Turn on the news and watch for yourself. This is a huge victory!

No Sleep Till Brooklyn

Today’s New York Times article by Susan Stellin, As Everyone Else Has Discovered Brooklyn, so Have Hoteliers, mentions a few points that seem oddly familiar to Aventura, Florida.

1. Brooklyn is where New Yorkers flock for lower rent and for an overall lower cost of living compared to Manhattan.

2. This area has also become popular for tourists.

Aventura is packed with many New Yorkers escaping high costs of living and of course the tourists from the New York area. If those two points weren’t enough of a comparison, she continues in the first paragraph, that’s where it gets interesting…

“Smith Travel Research, the hospitality research company, estimates that 40 more hotels are under construction in Brooklyn or in the planning stages, although some may never get off the ground if oversaturation becomes a concern. ”

Aventura is no stranger to projects never getting off the ground, like many South Florida cities suffering from the real estate balloon going POP. Earlier this month we mentioned the Terzetto project and the empty parcels of land vacant in Aventura. Well, right next to that project was the future home of Starwood’s Aloft Hotel, a project that never “got off the ground.” Stellin’s article mentions the plans of a Starwood Aloft Hotel in Brooklyn, “Next door to the 321-room Sheraton, Starwood plans to open in October a 176-room Aloft hotel, its less expensive brand aimed at younger and technologically savvy travelers,” let’s hope for Brooklyn’s sake it gets off the ground – that hotel seems really hip and cool. Hopefully someone will figure out a way to bring life back to the Aventura Starwood Aloft project, until then No Sleep Till Brooklyn – there are plenty hotels to choose from when you arrive.

Terzetto Villas update Public Hearing

The Terzetto residential project in Aventura is at the surface once again. In case you haven’t noticed, there’s a large “Notice of Public Hearing” sign in front of the Terzetto Villas. The Villas look as if they’ve been completed; however, the rest of the project is sitting empty. The Merco Group planned this project several years ago and it’s still empty – one of the few unfinished real estate developments in Aventura. Although a portion of the project has been polished up and looks nice when driving on 185th Street, let’s not forget the hundreds of yards of green tarp and fencing that covers the unfinished parcels.

2010 Wine World Cup

Game on! The FIFA World Cup matches are in full effect and the excitement is charging. Aventura is home to a lively Argentinian community and they’re now celebrating Argentina’s victory over Nigeria, 1-0. If you look closely at the balconies of many of the condos around Aventura, you’ll see fans hanging their favorite team’s national flag. This Argentina flag was spotted on one of the balconies at Admirals Port.

The city is full of soccer fans and as the tournament progresses the World Cup fever will build. There are many residents that don’t follow the sport, but enjoy gathering with friends for BBQs to watch the games. For you foodies that want to get in on the World Cup bandwagon, check out these clever youtube clips comparing the wines as countries battle. These clips might be equally as entertaining if you can polish off each bottle as its respective country wins. It’s a great time to start pouring your first glass of Malbec – Salud!

Aventura is home to many celebrities and others in the media, but we’re not claiming Scott Rothstein. Today he’s being sentenced, justice will prevail. In recent weeks the auctions came to a close as his exotic cars and yachts brought in over 5 million. The Wall Street Journal reported that a Sun-Sentinel story stated “In a little over an hour, the 11 cars, four yachts and two WaveRunners brought $5.8 million that will go to a restitution fund for victims of Rothstein’s massive $1.4 billion investment fraud scheme.” -read article

It’s a safe bet that South Florida Ponzi schemer extraordinaire Scott Rothstein will be checking into prison for a very long time when he’s sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Fort Lauderdale.

Street buzz and office pools are betting that U.S. District Judge James Cohn, an Alabama native appointed by President George W. Bush, will give the disbarred lawyer close to the maximum for his crime as the mastermind of South Florida’s biggest financial fraud.

Rothstein, convicted of running a $1.2 billion investment scam, says he deserves no more than 30 years because he pleaded guilty, spilled his guts to the feds and starred in an FBI sting that took down a reputed Italian Mafia figure.

It will likely be a media frenzy at the courthouse, we’ll update you with the news.

Hot Day, Hot Starbucks, Hot Coffee?

Did you happen to stop in at the local Starbucks on 182nd Street in the Fresh Market Plaza? The A/C is out of order and the store has two large air conditioning machines trying to cool the place. It looks like a secret NASA project – a space age frappuccino machine, but it’s not chilling anything. These machines were likely not designed to function during South Florida summers. The heat is intense, but the lines for coffee don’t stop. Locals still gather outside, the inside is way too hot.

They are working on fixing the issue now. If this is your regular Starbucks in Aventura, call before to check the status of the air conditioning – 305-705-0593.

Tonight is fight night. Sounds like it’s going to pour again, best to stay indoors. This fight will be exciting! Did you know Yuri is also studying to be a Rabbi?

Tonight Miguel Cotto will challenge Yuri Foreman for the World Boxing Association’s Super Welterweight Championship in the first fight to be held at a Yankees’ home ballpark since Ken Norton battled Muhammad Ali in 1976.
