Miami Dolphins (-2) vs. Atlanta Falcons (O/U 44.5)
Sunday, September 22, 2013 @ 1:00 PM – Sun Life Stadium, Miami Gardens, FL
Well folks, Yours Truly is 2-0 on Fins picks to date, coming within 1-point of an exact prediction Week 1 and within 4 total points last week (look it up, it’s all gloriously verifiable). But obviously, each week presents new circumstances, and like the NFL, all people really care about is “what have you done for me lately?” So here goes…Injuries for both home team and visitors are the main story leading up to this marquis game which could elevate the Fins way above the NFL radar with a win. On paper, Falcons still have dependable QB M.Ryan, explosive WR Julio Jones, and a gimpy WR Roddy White leading its offense. But missing star RB S.Jackson will hurt their inside run-game, unless replacement Snelling and change-of-page Quiz Rodgers surprise against the Fins’ vaunted rush-defense. The latter elite D, however, is likely to be sans premier NT P.Soliai. But the Dirty Birds like to throw the ball, especially to Julio whose match-up vs. ex-Falcon CB B.Grimes may be worth the price of admission alone. The key issue will be how TE Gonzo does against below-average cover-LBs, and whether WR3 H. Douglas will present mismatches against rookie CBs Davis and Taylor, whom are both likely to play. I like the speed rush of the Fins’ front 7 with some exotic-type blitz packages to pressure Ryan, much the same way they did Luck last week (but this time Ryan won’t have vaseline on his jersey to slime his way out of tackles the way the Colts QB apparently did; and rookie No. 3 overall pick D.Jordan will hopefully remember that this is not “touch” football).
The Dolphins’ offense is primed to have an explosive game, partly because the Birds lost 2 key defensive LB/DE pass rushers and run-stoppers last week (Biermann and Weatherspoon) and may be missing premier CB A.Samuel. This means a lot of touches for explosive RB L.Miller and double-move shots down-field from Tanny to speedy WR Wallace (Q but will play with iffy groin). RT T.Clabo, another ex-Falcon, will be extremely motivated (was not re-signed by ATL) so look for some holes on the right side to run through this week. I like the short-passing game that has developed with TE C.Clay to continue with success against over-matched cover LB’s. As always, if the ATL defense “clouds” its coverage to “60-Minutes”, WR Hartline is ready to tick-tick-tick himself for 100+ yards and TD. Slot receiver Gibson will also re-appear as a security blanket coming off his one-catch disappointment vs. Colts. This should be a high-scoring affair but home opener crowd combined with an injury-riddled Atlanta squad spells 3 wins jumping out of gate for the quasi-aqua and orange. Prediction: Miami 27 Atlanta 24 (overtime a possibility, but NFL’s most consistent kicker C. Sturgis comes through again!).
