Turkey Contest Improv Comedy

This past Wednesday night the Ft. Lauderdale Improv Comedy Club hosted their annual Turkey Contest. It’s an amateur competition featuring fresh talent from South Florida.  Why was this night different from all other nights? The New York City comic Jonathan Randall was visiting Aventura and performed a special guest spot.

The show was hosted by Ramon Garcia, a regular comic at the Improv, and he was enthusiastic about introducing new talent to the audience. Ramon balances his comedic career by writing, performing, hosting, and organizing competitions like this one.  When Ramon stepped on stage he quickly warmed up the crowd and had them laughing from the start. The atmosphere was perfect for an evening of amateur comedy.

The show flowed from act to act and the crowd supported each contestant; however, it was clear that some of the comics were more comfortable than others. The art of performing comedy is a organic process that develops with each performance. During this competition, each comic that participated received another notch in their comedy belt. It can take many years to evolve as a comedian and to craft an act that controls the room and gets laughs at every turn.

Jonathan Randall, hit the stage with a presence that demanded attention from the audience and they kept it during his entire set. He had the room under his spell and everyone was laughing – the type of laughter that causes tears. It was a hilarious performance that the crowd wanting more. The contestants really appreciated him visiting the club, many took notes on his writing style and witty delivery.

The winner of the contest was Justin Elliott, who had a solid set which left the audience laughing into stitches. Watch out for this new talent, he’s a strong comic with the ability to tell a hilarious story with smooth flow and unique comedic style. You’ll likely see his name around the South Florida comedy scene. He has a high energy performance; ladies, he explains in his set that he’s not a protector type, but he’s a real funny man.
