Rules for Minors – Aventura Mall

October 6th, 2010 · 6 Comments

Minors Beware of Parental Escort Policy

A few months ago there was a brawl at the Aventura Mall AMC movie theater. This may or may not have sparked the new rule concerning minors. Starting next week on Friday and Saturday nights, after 9:30PM, minors must be with a parent or guardian – 1 adult for 3 minors. This rule is not specific to the movie theater, but there’s not much else open after 9:30PM in the mall. Therefore, it’s likely, this is a direct response to the recent Aventura Mall brawl.

For years residents have complained about the rowdy groups of kids that hang out around the movies. There are even Aventura police that are stationed inside the mall and outside the movie theater. Now, it seems that the mall security will have a reason to question anyone they believe to be a minor if they’re not with a parent or guardian. Those minors at the mall without an adult with them, will not be allowed to remain in the mall.

Parental Escort Policy:
“Aventura Mall management provides an enjoyable shopping experience for families and customers of all ages. Accordingly, the following policy is in effect as of Friday, October 15, 2010. All youth under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian 21 years or older on Friday and Saturday evenings after 9:30pm. Valid identification with a photo and date of birth may be requested.
(1 Adult per 3 minors)”

Many believe this is a move in the right direction to create an enjoyable environment without groups of disrespectful kids. The thinking behind the new rule must be that the minors will behave when they’re with their parents. This might be the case, but what about all those minors that behave and are not a disturbance in the mall? It’s unfortunate that these minors run the risk of being asked for identification and must be accompanied by a parent of guardian.

“Does this mean I have to bring my parents on dates?” This was being discussed by two teenage boys reading the new sign. This rule does not allow for a 16 year old minor to take a date to the movies at the Aventura Mall on a Friday or Saturday night, without their parents attending – no teen wants to hang with their parents on the weekend. It’s inconvenient that a 16 year old, Aventura resident, has to travel further from home to go see a movie with date, if they want to go alone.

Let’s be honest, the rule is not meant to prevent good kids from their right of passage – the late night weekend movie date without a parent. You know, the first awkward moments when the lights go down and a teenage guy attempts to put his arm around his date. Although this rule is likely only meant to stop the rowdy teens that have been a disturbance, security will be forced to be tight with all minors. Some minors might get away without being carded, but if that goes on too much will we see the ACLU get involved? This might occur if only certain types of minors are stopped while others are allowed to remain – or not. This might be getting carried away, but this new rule is definitely controversial.

It’s unfortunate that there are so many that don’t behave and lack respect in public. Minors are always going to have a tendency to be slightly unruly – it’s all part of growing up. However, this action was likely taken as a preventative measure to avoid another scene at the mall. These are scenarios above and beyond the typical unwanted yet tolerable teenage mischief.

This new rule is scheduled for October 15, 2010. It’s not clear how this will be enforced and received by the public.

Let’s hear from you – parents, teenagers, minors, teenagers, and all that wish to add their two cents.

    What do the teens think?

Being a 16 year old i recognize this new policy as absurd. The majority cannot be identified by the misbehavior of the minorities. As in all cases, there are some who chose wrongdoing but we as Aventura citizens cannot be judged and penalized for their behavior. This should be revoked immediately.

seems a bit opressive. How are teens supposed to date if they must bring mommy to the show; very embarrasing.
I`m wondering if this is now a racial issue
since most patrons that time of night aren`t the typical Aventura resident.

    @ Joey,
But those “patrons” you’re speaking of are the ones who were involved in the large fight, not the typical Aventura resident. Really though, the mall doesn’t care who visits (they look at it as the more ticket sales the theatre makes = more money for the mall). But of course they’re concerned with safety too and that’s why they’ve taken these new measures.
And yes, it’s sad so many good teens have to suffer for others extreme misbehavior. That’s life though.
