Study Skills for a Great Year

August 30th, 2010 · 1 Comment

How to Improve Your Study Skills or How do I study and organize myself?

Going to high school is a wonderful achievement. You learn how to be responsible for yourself and help around the house. Learning how to learn is a unique experience, but unfortunately, no one really teaches you how to learn. In high school the expectation is that you will be able to do a number of things independently, so developing good organizational skills in high school, learning how to study, take notes, and developing a consistent methodology for learning new material is very important.

Here are some study habits you need to know to enhance your educational experience
Taking notes in class is very important for learning. Taking notes reinforces the information. Every time you write the material a portion is retained in your memory. This is why one of the study methodologies is to re-write the information. Some people like to highlight the important information, others write questions and points of clarification for the material.

Asking questions of the instructor is necessary if you don’t understand the material. One of my sayings has always been that no question is “stupid”, all questions are important. For every question asked, there are 3-5 other people in the class with the same question who are too embarrassed to ask. So asking questions is important and necessary and you may be doing a number of classmates a favor.

Each person develops their own way of studying. Some are able to just review the information, some re-write the information, and some create mnemonics. Mnemonics are devices to help us remember (aide memoire or memory aide). They come in many varieties and flavors, and can aid memorization of many types of information. Mnemonics may be related to words and numbers or sayings which you put together to remember the information. They generally consist of a word, each of whose letters help the user to remember the first letters of items in a list. There are also other types of mnemonics, such as visual mnemonics. Mnemonics rely on anchoring associations upon that which is familiar or distinct, and relating it to that which is novel or unfamiliar. Depending on the nature of the information, the relationship implied by the link may seem natural, or otherwise quite arbitrary. Look up mnemonic in Wiktionary, the free dictionary. … Pneuma is Greek for air, wind, spirit, and breath, which metaphorically describes a non-material influence or being.  Any method that works for them and is effective would be okay.

An example of a mnemonic would be for the carpal bones in the hand. The carpel bones are the bones that make up the hand. They are in order, the Schapoid or Navicular, Lunate, Trisiform, Pisiform, and in the next row, the Greater Trapiezium or Multitangular, Trapazoid or Lesser Multitangular, Capitate and Hamate.  The mnemonic that we teach with that is:

  • Scared Lovers Try Positions That They Cannot Handle”
  • Students Like The Professor To Teach Complex Hypotheses”
  • She Likes To take Prostitutes To The Calley Hotel” (to take representing the 2 T’s of Triquetrum)
Studying can be aggravating, exasperating, tedious and just plain tiresome. But, if you schedule times to study it becomes a little bit easier.  You don’t have to just cram, but can schedule times during the day that you study and give yourselves ample time for breaks and a little fun. Scheduling studying times also insures that when tests are given, you don’t have to wrack your brains since you will have been studying the information all along. This is a great habit to get into and actually results in both greater command of the material and more free time for recreation.

Developing good study habits may be difficult, but it is the basis for everything we do in life. Learning how to study and organizing our classes is as important as everything else we do in school. In fact, it is probably the most important skill we will learn. Figuring out a way to study that works for you is the best lesson you can give yourself.

Good luck and study well!
