Offseason Thoughts on the AFC East

July 18th, 2010 · No Comments

So NFL training camps don’t open until the end of the month. The first pre-season game isn’t until August 8th, and football news is coming in on a slow trickle…hmmm…Some intriguing AFC-East items that come to mind as we look to fill up empty space:

Not Necessarily My Predictions…Yet

Miami Dolphins:

Michael Lombardi of NFL.com in his latest column breaking down the AFC tells us that the Fins are a Super Bowl contender! Is his reasoning sound? You decide. In the meantime, I have some probing questions:

- Will Chad Henne be the complete QB he is expected to be? I mean we already know that he has a strong arm; but what about the decision-making?

- Is Brandon Marshall better off with Henne or Pennington? Consider this: Brandon is a YAC (yards after catch) guy, not a speed burner. So Henne’s rifle arm is not necessarily an advantage in throwing the deep ball to No. 19 (although he’ll get it there quicker on the curls and deep outs).

- Wasn’t Pennington the guy who brought the Fins a division championship just 2 years ago? Ok, I’m willing to see what the ex-Wolverine can do – but how much sand is in the hourglass?

- The third year QB will be tested quickly as games 2 through 6 feature the DF’s of: Vikes, Jets, Pats, Packers, and Steelers. Hmmmm.

NY Jets:

- Was it a mistake to let RB’s T.Jones and L.Washington leave NY and replace them with a fragile and aging LT? Hmmmm.

- How much will WR S.Holmes’ 4-game suspension affect the Fast Planes’ passing game considering they start the season vs. Ravens, Pats and at Miami?

- How will former Dolphins DE, Jason Taylor be received in Sunlife Stadium for Fins’ home opener on Sept. 26th…more boos than cheers?

New England Patriots:

- Will Wes Welker be ready for the start of the season, and if so, will his offseason health issues linger?

- Will Randy Moss be more motivated given this is a contract year for him (meaning free agent after this season)?

- Who will take over the starting RB job this year, or does it really matter given they do pretty well with RBBC (Running Back by Committee)?

- Is Tom Brady actually starting to decline, or was ’09 a typical first year removed from ACL surgery? (he’s still 4th ranked Fantasy QB)

Buffalo Bills:

- Who will win the Brohm vs. Edwards vs. Fitzgerald battle at QB? (and does anyone really care?)

- Will rookie RB CJ Spiller able to take starting job away from underrated but talented Fred Jackson?

- How cold is it in Rich Stadium when you’re rooting for a hopeless team?

My Pre-Training Camp Predictions for the AFC East in 2010 (I reserve the right to change these whimsically and frequently):

1. Pats (11-5)

2. Jets (11-5)

3. Fins (9-7)

4. Bills (5-11)

And for an intriguing look at some key AFC East training camp battles,  see Pete Prisco’s piece at CBSSports.com.

That’s all for now.
