NYU South Florida Club

May 18th, 2010 · 1 Comment

New York University Alumni have an active group in South Florida that gets together for social events throughout the year. This past Sunday the NYU South Florida Club met up at the Florida Marlins baseball game. This was an interesting way to combine school spirit with team spirit – half of the group was cheering for their former home team the New York Mets, while the others supported the home team. At the same time both sides of this group bleed purple and white (the NYU colors).

The connections between South Florida and New York are found in many ways – NYU Alumni are just one layer. The most common are the “snow birds” who regularly visit South Florida to escape the winter months in NewYork. They bring with them the zest of New York lifestyle and bickering, specifically about how poor service is in South Florida and how everyone moves so slow.

We do operate at a different pace then in New York; however, Sunday the Florida Marlins hit a little harder and ran a bit faster bringing them a victory over the New York Mets – Marlins 10, Mets 8. Go Marlins!

I was part of the NYU contingent that helped put together the event and yep a good time was had by all – except for the Mets and those rooting for them. But heck, there was only one professional ball team on the diamond on Sunday and that was the Marlins. The Mets dropped so many balls that there could be a whole new statistical category for them – MBD – Most Balls Dropped. Hope to see all the NYU folks the next time we organize a sports event.
