Aventura Book Club

April 23rd, 2010 · 10 Comments

South Florida is mainly known for its beaches, sports, and tourist attractions. There are so many amazing things to experience outside and around Aventura. Located in between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami, Aventura residents can easily get to so many destinations. For those of us that don’t feel like fighting the traffic or need some silence, a great book is the best option. In fact, the Aventura Book Club (ABC) is gaining popularity for those looking for something different.

Recently, we had the opportunity to connect with Marylin Kovalis, the founder of the Aventura Book Club, to speak about this fun social reading experience. She explained, as it’s written on her Facebook group page, that this is a group for anyone 20+ who loves to read…and socialize! This is a laid back environment, but with a defined purpose.  Whether it’s fiction, non-fiction, paperback or hardcover, you will read and experience a new book every month.  Come to laugh, share stories, and make new friends!

They get together once a month at local hot-spots in the Aventura to discuss the book of the month. There are so many residents that are connected to the Aventura Book Club and everyone really enjoys the book selections as well as the discussion groups. Marylin loves books and the reading experience. She’s really excited about reading as many great books as possible. According to Marylin it’s not enough to just read, she loves engaging people about the issues and experiencing with others what each story has to offer. The Aventura Book Club gives local residents a chance to share in these exchanges that Marylin loves creating.

The Aventura Book Club has showcased many books at their past meetings. Here’s a quick list of some of the books on their list.

“Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson
“Those Who Save Us” by Jenna Blum
“Jitterbug Perfume” by Tom Robbins
“Deadly Choices” by Chris Black
“The Year of Living Biblically” by A.J. Jacobs
“Bel Canto” by Ann Patchett
“Crazy Love” by Leslie Morgan Steiner
“Little Bee” by Chris Cleave
“The Idiot” by Fyodor Dostoevsky
“The Reader” by Bernhard Schlink
“The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho
“A Clockwork Orange” by Anthony Burgess
“In the Woods” by Tana French

Now you can understand that the Aventura Book Club tackles various different types of books, keeping it exciting all the time. In fact, the next novel up for discussion is Look Again, by Lisa Scottoline. This novel is about a woman who comes to suspect that her adopted child is actually another couple’s kidnapped child. The next meeting of Aventura Book Club will be Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at Paul’s Bakery Cafe (Lower level by Nordstroms) in the Aventura Mall.

Here are a few words from Lisa Scottoline

We’re looking forward to this ABC meeting and there are already many confirmed members attending, do a quick search on Facebook for Aventura Book Club so you can stay connected. The Aventura Book Club meetings don’t just end after the discussion. A recent reading of “Three Cups of Tea” was followed up by visiting the author Greg Mortenson when he was in Miami. A photo and write about this is featured on her new blog –

Marylin was so excited about this event and how it connected directly to the ABC experience. She looks forward to hosting many more meetings to connect people and the books they love.

We’re looking forward to having the Aventura Book Club update us with their book list as well as reviews, rants and discussions about each novel. Stay tuned for the feedback about “Look Again” by Lisa Scottoline.
