This post was emailed to us last night in efforts to spread the word regarding the horrific events in Venezuela – http://www.forward.com/articles/15073/
“Even before an attack on a Caracas synagogue in which Torah scrolls were thrown to the floor and “death to the Jews” was painted on synagogue walls, the Jews of Venezuela were feeling threatened.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s rhetoric linking the country’s Jewish community to Israel’s military operation in Gaza caused the Jewish community to step up security a few weeks ago, according to reports. And on Jan. 24, in a harbinger of the attack six days later, a community rabbi walking on Shabbat was beaten by a group of attackers before being rescued by taxi drivers.
In the Jan. 30 incident, up to 15 people attacked the Tiferet Israel Sephardic synagogue, throwing the scrolls and damaging some, and painting the epithets on the walls, according to reports.”

My friend Eduardo Montes Bradley, posted this picture on his facebook.
It made an instant effect on me, I felt compelled to express myself about recent events.
I was reading some disturbing news from Venezuela.
Now that President Bush is gone, The leader of the so called
Revolucion Bolivariana has found a new enemy, “The Jews” how original is that?
It seems that, “THE IGNORANTE” also known as “THE COMANDANTE”, is now
questioning “The Holocaust” and the existence of the “Concentration Camps”
The Final Solution, to him, was not really “that dramatic”, how insane is that?
How did this ANIMAL got elected, How “THE IGNORANTE” lasted so long.
I pledge everyone, not to mention his name anymore, just call him for what he is.

Sad to hear, sad to see. I am a cuban jew so you can imagine how I feel about Chavez and Venezuela. I also have a lot of family in Caracas, also Jewish. Hearing these comments saddens me. Any time you hear about hate crimes towards a community you have to wonder what causes somebody to go to those extreme measures. It’s odd to me that anybody can justify it at all. In some warped way they believe its the right thing to do. That’s the scary part.
I recently saw the movie DEFIANCE. I am proud to see how Jewish people during such difficult oppression, were able to survive by gathering together, building a community, and withstanding all sorts of dangers. We must continue to act as a community to build awareness of our strength, our generosity, and our will to live.
A blessing to the Jewish Communities of Venezuela. Your brothers and sisters are ready to fight for you.
